I was just thinking if you could somehow build a monster hp car with a high gear ratio, but also a lower ratio that could help achieve much lower gas milage. I am guessing that with a system like this you would only need a 4 or 5 speed trans. How off the mark am I? Is this a stupid idea?

So ... a two-speed rear-end?

There was a Corvette or something with two final speeds or something like that.

They exist. Look up the Corvette 4+3 transmission, I think that was how it worked.

or just make top gear overdrive?
If it has monster HP you won't need the lower gears around town anyway.

Medium duty trucks come with 2 speed rear ends, and have for years. The technology is there.

That wasn't the rear-end shifting. That was a standard T-10 4-speed with an automatic overdrive unit stuck on the back end of it. The rear diff was a regular old D44.
